Hispanic American Literature

Find Books: Primary and Secondary

The following Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) reveal records for books held by our library. These include primary (e.g., drama, fiction, poetry); secondary (criticism); and reference (e.g., encyclopedias) books. The subdivision "History and criticism" identifies literary criticism.

Run the same subject searches in WorldCat, a "union catalog" of the holdings of thousands of libraries to find books and book chapters not held by Gitenstein Library. Use our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service to obtain those titles.

Most useful:

Books published in Spanish:

  • Click here for a list of adult Spanish language books held by our library. This list includes both primary literary works and secondary criticism. Titles appear in descending order beginning with the most recently published.
  • For some subjects it is possible to append (Spanish) to the heading to see lists of books written 1) in Spanish; or 2) in English about primary Spanish language works. Use these subjects to find primary and second works.

Browse lists of books in Library of Congress Call Number (LCCN) order. I recommend browsing the stacks in the physical library, but you can also click on a link below to browse online.

WorldCat is a "union catalog" or discovery tool that connects researchers with the descriptions of millions of books held by thousands of libraries. Search WorldCat to find books about your topic beyond our local collection. Identify e-books available to read or borrow immediately by conducting an Advanced search. Look for the Library Code box toward the bottom of the page. Enter one of the following library codes before executing your search:

  • INARC (e-books from Internet Archive)
  • HATHI (e-books from HathiTrust)
  • NJT (books/e-books from our Gitenstein Library)
  • OAPEN (open access e-books)

Use Interlibrary Loan (ILL) to request books and book chapters not held by our library. Chapters generally arrive quickly. Physical books will likely take a longer.
