Related Databases (LGBT+)
The following Gitenstein Library databases index scholarly journals in various disciplines related to LGBT+ history and literature.
- Contemporary Women's Issues This database brings together information about women in over 150 countries. Researchers might wish to select Gender Equity, Lesbian Studies, and/or Lesbians in the Subject Area box.
- Ethnic NewsWatch This database reveals reactions within various ethnic communities to the LGBT and Women's Rights movements over the last several decades. Its articles can be used as either secondary or primary sources depending on the researcher's purpose. From the homepage click on Advanced search. Choose Subject heading (all) from the drop-down menu. Subjects such as gays, lesbians, and homosexuality, when combined with a second search term, e.g. "queer theory", will retrieve highly relevant results.
- GenderWatchThe publications covered by GenderWatch focus on the impact of gender across a broad spectrum of disciplines including history. Like its companion database, Ethnic NewsWatch, it provides access to some primary source material (narrow results by Document type after running your search).
History Databases (LGBT+)

- JSTOR (interdisciplinary)Users might wish to click on Advanced Search from the homepage, and then scroll down the page to check the boxes next to Education and/or Feminist & Women's Studies.
- Project Muse (interdisciplinary)From the homepage click on Advanced Search. In the left-hand column, inside the Research Area box, click the check boxes next to the following categories: Education, Literature, History, and/or Women's Studies, Gender, and Sexuality. Useful is the ability to search for articles by standard Library of Congress Subject Headings or LCSH for short. See the Find Books tab for a list of relevant LCSH. Project Muse is highly complementary of JSTOR.
Literature Databases (LGBT+)
These Gitenstein Library databases index and/or provide full-text access to journals and other secondary works of literature. Topics related to LGBT+ literature for adults and youth are covered.
- JSTOR (Interdisciplinary)Users might wish to click on Advanced Search from the homepage, and then scroll down the page to check the boxes next to Education and/or Feminist & Women's Studies.
- Literature Online (ProQuest)From the database homepage, click "Search all criticism." On the resulting page, just to the right of the Subject heading: search box, click "Look up subject heading." On the next page enter a term such as Young Adult, and then click Find. A list of related terms appears. Check the radio button next to the subjects you are interested in, and then click Add to search. Finally, click the Search button. Narrow your results by clicking on "Modify search" and then entering a second theme (or search facet) such as gay to the Keywords search box.
- MLA International Bibliography (ProQuest)From the database homepage, click on Advanced Search. Choose "Subject heading (all) — MLASU" from the drop-down menu. Click "Look up Subject headings (all)" when it appears. In the resulting pop-up window enter the term young adults, and then click Find. Check the radio button next to this theme and then click the "Add to Search" button. Finally, click the Search button. Narrow your results by adding a second theme (or search facet), e.g. gay, to the second search box on the Advanced Search page.
