Reading international news and newspapers is a great way to get a feel for a country's social climate and public opinion. Below are some library databases and free international news sites to get you started. Remember that even the most credible, diligent news outlets—the ones that take the ethics of journalism seriously—can report wrong information during the fog of war. Confirm breaking information from one news source against other credible outlets.

Subscriber content via library databases

Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)
Viewpoint / Viewswire
Subscriber-only content is licensed through the library database ABI/Inform Global

  • After connecting to the database, choose Advanced Search
  • Enter Ukraine in the first search box | change the drop-down list next to the search box from Anywhere to Location -- LOC
  • Enter viewswire in the next search box
  • From the left side of the results page, use the “Sorted by” feature to select Most recent first from the drop-down list to display the latest results first
  • Results include current news and analysis from the Economist Intelligence Unit, as well as features such as Basic Data, Country Outlook, Political Structure, etc.

Subscriber content from various publishers is available in
Business Source Premier

  • After connecting to the database, ignore the search boxes and choose Publications from the top menu [in the blue bar above the blank search boxes]
  • On the Publications page, type Ukraine into the 2nd blank search box (the one beneath the word "Browsing")
  • Results include country reports such as Country Monitor (IHS Markit) and Country Review (CountryWatch)
  • Select any of these, then follow the links to read the most recently available (extensive) country report from each of these publishers.

  • After connecting to the database, click on Access World News. Click on Special Reports in the left-hand column.
