Use these reference works to obtain background information about your topic, discover related terms (keywords) for searching library databases (see Find Articles on this guide), and to find other relevant books and articles. Encyclopedias are a great way to begin your research.

Find Books and Book Chapters

Click on these Library of Congress Subject Headings to find monographs (books, e-books, and reports) held by Gitenstein Library. Look for books authored by historians, other academics, and journalists (e.g., New York Times reporters). Try your own searches. Remember to use <history> in the Subject field to narrow your results to the history of a drug, era, or historical movement (e.g., <opium AND history> in subject).
