Reading Laterally

Checking the dates and citations on a source is a good practice, but the best way to evaluate any source you find is to look outside of it. This practice is called lateral reading. Even a quick Google or Wikipedia search for the author's name, or for the name of the site or journal, can tell you a lot about whether what you've found is credible.
