Banned Books Guide: Take action against book bans

This libguide is build to provide basic information about banned books, helpful tools and resources as well as best practices against censorship.

Recommended tools/websites

There are many ways to take action against book banning and censorship:

- stay informed: are there any book challenges in your town? your school district? maybe your county?

- sign up to receive newsletters and calls to action (see the list of organizations below)

- sign petitions, share them with others

- if you want to become more active, find out if there are local groups that could use your help. For example in New Jersey we have Rapid/Regional Response team organized by school, public and academic librarians. Join their call to action through New Jersey Library Association, New Jersey Association of School Librarians, or email them directly: rrt@njasl.org

- attend local meetings that discuss and explore censorship issues

- attend school board meetings, library trustees meetings

- not feeling comfortable to attend the meeting in person? Write a letter, statement or testimony and send it to the school board president, superintendent of the schools, or the library director

- educate yourself and READ BANNED BOOKS to develop your own opinions! The challengers often judge the book without reading it!

- if there are challenges happening in your community - contact organizations that can help, please see the list below.
