About

Gitenstein Library is a partner site for Yale University's Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies, which records, collects, and preserves Holocaust witness testimonies. To access the video archives, first register for an account on the Aviary platform, then request a video. After your first video request is approved, you will have access to all videos in the archives.

TCNJ users can access the videos from computers on campus, or off-campus with their TCNJ username and password, followed by their Aviary login.

Guest researchers can view testimonies by logging into their Aviary accounts on guest computers within Gitenstein Library. Eight guest computers are located in the Reference area on the first floor, and one guest computer is located in the fourth floor media area, next to microfilm readers.

Steps to Access Fortunoff Video Archives

Step 1: Register in Aviary

Go to the Fortunoff main site (this is via the library website), Once in the Fortunoff Video Archive, click on Menu, then  Log In, and then Join Now. Please check the password help if you have trouble creating a password.

Step 2: Receive Confirmation Email

After you submit the form, you will receive a confirmation email. Check your spam if it doesn’t show up in your inbox. This is just to verify that you are indeed a human and not a bot.

Step 3: Search and Request Access to Testimonies

Return to the Fortunoff main site (this is via the library website), login if necessary, and then search for a testimony. You can also click in the find content box and hit return to see all testimonies. Click on a testimony in the search results and request access. You only need to request access to one testimony to obtain viewing rights for the entire collection. You should receive an approval email a few minutes after you make your request. You will also receive a link to the film you requested. If you are off campus, this link in the email will not work (since it does not recognize you as a TCNJ user). You need to access the Fortunoff main site via the Library homepage.  Follow STEP 4 below to view videos from off campus.

Step 4: View Requested Testimonies

Once you get the approval email for your first video request, you can view any of the testimonies. If you are off campus, make sure you are accessing your videos from the Fortunoff database via the Gitenstein Library website as follows:

2. You will be prompted for your TCNJ Username and Password (this is the Library EZProxy) .
3. Sign into the  Fortunoff Archive with the username and password that you initially created for tthe Fortunoff system.
4. Search for video that you requested access to.
Note that once you have gone through this initial approval process with Yale, and received access to one video , you can now receive access to ALL videos on the site.
