The majority of photographs before 1920 are 12" X 16" and mounted. The oldest photograph is an oval 6" x 7.5" class picture, which dates from 1870. Between 1890 and 1919 there are class pictures for each year. After 1920 most of the pictures are 7", 8", or 9" high and range from 17" to 28" long and are unmounted.
Most of the photographs are formal group pictures of the February and June graduating classes. Between the years 1903 and 1917 there is often a third dated picture that may be of the model school graduating class.
Beginning in the 1930s the graduates in the pictures wear caps and gowns. The people in the photographs previous to that year wear street clothing. There is one file with a small number of unidentified photographs of people dressed in caps and gowns. There are no photographs in the collection after 1962.
For the years 1956, 1957, and 1960 there are some photographs that are not catalogued. These are duplicates and may be distributed as needed.
